Germ-free Carworth Farms Webster mice were given filter-sterilised, chemically defined liquid diets. In the first series of studies, the basal diet and glucose were given as 2 separate solutions and glucose was increased gradually after weaning. In the second series, mice were given solutions of amino acids with vitamins, minerals and glucose, fat and glucose. Mice were produced up to the 5th generation but growth was only two-thirds of normal in most mice.
