Factors affecting malnutrition and chronic diseases in India is discussed. These factors include the country's changing demography, its economy and recent development in its agricultural sector. The current state of the nutrition of the people of India, especially the newborns and children are assessed and compared from previous years. There is an observed reduction in the incidence of communicable diseases and disorders related to undernutrition in India, although this is being coupled by an increase in the prevalence of several chronic diseases. Thus, recommendations to immediately control and prevent this rise in non-communicable chronic diseases, including obesity and cardiovascular diseases are emphasized.
