Our experience in the treatment of complications of Plasmodium falciparum malaria

From a total of 207 patients undergoing falciparum malaria, and analysis is carried out of 23 cases presenting complications. Such complications are: cerebral malaria, bone marrow insufficiency, respiratory distress, acute renal insufficiency, disseminate intravascular coagulation and blackwater fever. Aspects related to therapy are stressed. A review of physiologic basis of the most important complications is made, emphasizing of the need of guiding therapy according to such concepts. Results of final evolution of the cases, corresponding worse diagnosis to patients with acute renal insufficiency and respiratory distress, 100% mortality, are exposed.
