In three herds with a history of piglet diarrhoea, in spite of vaccination aganst Escherichia coli in two herds, every second litter in a total of 108 litters was given Enterococcus (Streptococcus) faecium M74 for the first three days of life. There were no significant differences in the rates of diarrhoea and mortality, and no enteropathogenic E. coli was isolated, but treated piglets gained significantly more weight than controls.
