The effects of capsaicin on 45Ca2+ uptake were studied in cultured rat aortic smooth muscle and mouse neuroblastoma cell lines. Capsaicin (up to 300 microM) caused a dose-dependent inhibition of 45Ca2+ uptake both under resting (5 mM K+) and depolarizing (50 mM K+) conditions in both cell lines. These results provide one possible mechanism of action of capsaicin.
