The totality of positive cultures of an Intensive Care Unit, in a two year period, was analyzed with the use of a personal computer programmed for the management of hospital infections. The 301 cultures comprised the data and produced graphic outputs which permitted to study the bacterial incidence of the Unit and the sensitivity patterns of the main microorganisms to several antibiotics. The temporal evolution of these data was also determined. The aim of this work was to define the antimicrobian schedule padronization which would cover all patients interned in the Unit with nosocomial infection, only on hand of direct bacterioscopic examination. The results showed that the cefoxitin and amikacin association was the best choice when the probable diagnosis was that of a Gram negative infection, and the sulfametoxazol and trimeropin combination when it was that of S. aureus infection. Wide covering with the three mentioned antibiotics should be used in patients with non-individualized infections.
