In 1968 type SAT 2 infection was diagnosed in Tanzania after 4 years of apparent freedom from this type of F & M virus. The epidemic spread and was further complicated by the infection of previously vaccinated cattle. The cause of the vaccination breakdown was investigated by typing the virus, using complement fixation antigenic studies and field investigations, in different regions of Tanzania. Results showed that vaccination breakdowns were probably due to the use of a vaccine of poor antigenicity and containing a subtype different from the field strain.
