The development of a clinical nutrition management program in state university hospitals is described, and the process of problem identification (using a quality assurance program), strategies for improvement, and results of corrective actions are illustrated. The problem was identified in a retrospective audit of 164 cancer patients, showing a lack of adequate screening and medical record documentation, and the presence of nutritional risk in many of the patients. Aspects of the corrective plan and its implementation and resultant outcomes are discussed. (wz)
