Effect of flucythrinate impregnated ear tags on fly attack in cattle

Of three groups, each of eight calves, one was given two ear tags impregnated with 7.5% flucythrinate, one was given one tag on the right ear, and one was not tagged. The flucythrinate content of flank hair was highest and persisted longest in the group with two tags. In calves with one tag it was highest on the right flank. The percentage of the Hydrotaea irritans population on the heads of tagged animals was much lower than on untagged heads. Fly numbers around the flanks were only reduced in the group with two tags. It is suggested that impregnated tail straps or leg bands might help to prevent summer mastitis.
