A microtiter neutralization (N) test for simultaneous detection of ethanethiol (ETSH) sensitive and resistant antibodies to enterovirus 70 (EV70) using human embryonic skin fibroblasts was described. Antibodies to EV70 were studied in plasma and CSF samples from 41 patients with post-conjunctivitis radiculopathies (PCR) encountered during the 1981 epidemic. Serum antibody titers in 11 patients of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis without neurological complications (AHC) were also determined. ETSH sensitive antibodies could be detected in patients with AHC and PCR. Among patients with PCR, the cranial radiculopathies (CR) group had higher percentage of patients with ETSH sensitive antibodies. Only 2 (both belonging to asymmetric upper and lower limb radiculopathy group) of 22 CSF samples had detectable N antibodies to EV70. These findings suggest that in 1 group of patients the central nervous immune system may produce virus specific antibodies locally, whereas in the other group autoimmune mechanism triggered by virus infection may result in neurological complications.
