Sporadic cases of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis due to enterovirus type 70

Twenty-two patients suspected of having sporadic acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) during the post-epidemic period (Feb. 1982 to Jan. 1983) were studied for the demonstration of enterovirus type 70 (EV 70) antigen in the cytoplasm of conjunctival cells by the indirect immunofluorescent technique. Virus-specific antigen could be detected in 11 of 22 patients, suggesting the spread of EV 70 in the population during the post-epidemic period in sporadic form, as in the case of enteroviruses, in general. The nature of cytoplasmic fluorescence was diffuse in 8 cases and was inclusion-like in 3 of 11 antigen positive AHC cases. In the antigen negative group of conjunctivitis patients the etiological agent(s) might be unrelated one(s). Healthy subjects studied during this period had no evidence of subclinical infection of the eyes.
