Hemodynamic effects of combination treatment with dopamine and dobutamine in patients following open heart surgery

The hemodynamic effects of Dopamine (10 .mu.g/kg/min), Dobutamine (10 .mu.g/kg/min) and Dopamine combined with Dobutamine (each 5 .mu.g/kg per min) were studied following cessation of cardiopulmonary bypass in 30 patients. Cardiac index, stroke volume index and left ventricular stroke work index increased similarly regardless of the infusion methods. Systolic arterial pressure increased significantly with each catecholamine alone, but Dopamine-Dobutamine combination showed no significant changes. Heart rate and double product increased significantly with each catecholamine alone, but Dopamine-Dobutamine combination prevented its increase. Dopamine-Dobutamine combination enhances left ventricular performance without increase of myocardial oxygen consumption. The present data suggest that the combination infusion method would be more useful than the each infusion as the positive inotropic agents.
