The degree of and tendency to alcohol abuse in patients suffering from alcoholism and chronic recurrent painful pancreatitis (CRPP) is mainly regulated by the character of the painful syndrome which can produce a phenomenon of false alcoholism remission. Life expectancy of alcoholics with CRPP depends not only on the severity of the organic affection of the pancreas but on the clinical course of alcoholism after discharge from surgical hospital. In order to make operative treatment of CRPP in alcoholics effective anti-alcoholic therapy should be started at the stage of false remission or in the preoperative period.
