In this article, initiatives implemented in Brazil for the control of rubella, including the prevention of congenital rubella syndrome, are discussed. These initiatives focused on mass rubella vaccination. Strategies used in implementing the vaccination programme, including social mobilization, public awareness campaigns, monitoring and evaluation, are described. Initial campaign results are also discussed.
