Management practices of New York and Vermont DHI herds with low somatic cell counts

A 72-question mail-in survey of milking management practices was sent to 71 New York and Vermont, USA, DHIA herds that have maintained a somatic cell count level <175 000 cells/ml for 4 consecutive years. A 56% (28 stall barn, 12 free stall barn) response was received. No trends in milk yield, milking system designs or milking procedures were observed. Twice-a-day milking occurred in 39 out of 40 herds. Only 1 herd milked 3 times per day. Chopped hay and straw were the most frequently used bedding materials, followed closely by the use of rubber mats. Sand was used in 3 of 12 free stall herds. All dairymen used post-milking teat dip. 92% treated all cows at drying off, 5% selectively treated dry cows and 3% treated all dry cows twice during their dry period. Cows were examined for abnormal milk prior to udder preparation in 59% of the herds. Mastitis incidence increased in 40% of the herds due to hot weather. Dairymen surveyed agreed that milking clean dry udders, use of the post-milking teat dip and routine dry cow treatment are essential factors in long-term production of high-quality milk.
