Satisfactory results were obtained in 111 patients with asthma treated by acupuncture and moxibustion of Feishu (UB 13), Dazhui (Du 14) and Fengmen (UB 12) points. The effect of stimulating these points on pulmonary function and on relieving asthmatic symptoms was also observed. Electrothoracograph was employed before and after treatment (acupuncture with moxibustion or acupuncture with cupping) to record the indices of pulmonary function. These showed marked difference in experimental groups before and after treatment (P < 0.05, P < 0.001) but not with the contrast group (P > 0.05). Acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping therapy were demonstrated to improve pulmonary function. Orthogonal test (three factors and two levels) further showed the curative effect of Feishu (UB 13) to be optimal, followed by Dazhui (Du 14) and Fengmen (UB 12). The manipulation varied with the points used-for Feishu (UB 13), shallow puncture, while for Dazhui (Du 14) and Fengmen (UB 12) we used deep puncture.
