An article is presented discussing the problems encountered in the control of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in China. It discusses the lack of and the flaws in a surveillance system, the difficulty in implementing a public health policy on HIV/AIDS, the lack of testing sites for the minorities, illegal blood collection practices, injecting drug abuse and prostitution. In 1996-97, funding was at $2 500 000. The central government has allocated $12 000 000/year for 5 years to improve the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
