An energy-nitrogen balance model developed from animal studies was adapted for use in bioenergetic studies in adults recuperating from semi-starvation. The adaptation incorporates energy-nitrogen balance conditions and steady-state continuous infusion rates of energy-nitrogen formula to the adult patients. As a result, the necessary components of the energy-nitrogen balance equation can be accurately determined, and a comprehensive description of whole-body energy efficiency is possible using the mathematical model. This procedure can be applied to both healthy and diseased subjects.(wz)
