Some scientists are taking steps that could help to reduce the public's growing distrust of nanotechnology. Public distrust of nanotechnology is growing and set to increase as the perceived dangers of this technology become the next campaign focus for environmental groups. Having learned some tough lessons about the need to gain the public's trust in regard to the issue of genetically modified food, scientists need to avoid the same mistakes. Several researchers are currently investigating how nanoparticles interact with the environment or with the human body. Meanwhile, senior nanotechnology and science-policy experts have started to consider safety issues, and others are trying to encourage scientists and engineers to engage with the public and address their fears directly.
