Bombesin-like immunoreactivity in the chicken brain stem

An immunocytochemical analysis, according to the PAP-DAB procedure, was performed on the chicken brain stem, to study the local distribution of the neurons reacting to anti-bombesin rabbit antibodies. Immunoreactivity was not increased by any pre-treatment; positive and negative controls of the immunoreaction were carried out. A positivity was detected: 1. in short neuronal process within the X-nerve nuclei, at the intermediate third of the medulla oblongata; 2. in perikarya near the ponto-mesencephalic border, within a territory belonging to the n.mesencephalicus profundus; 3. in perikarya and neuronal processes within a dorso-lateral cell group of the caudal half of the mesencephalic tegmentum belonging to the n-tegmentalis latero-dorsalis; 4. in perikarya and short neuronal processes of the rostro-ventral portion of the mesencephalic tegmentum.
