Desertification control in China: possible solutions

The most urgent task to combat desertification in China is the innovation of desertification control methods and institutions. Long-term efforts to control desertification in China have mainly involved the planting of trees and grasses and the enclosure of pasture. However, these methods have only achieved limited success, and more control of soil-wind erosion that results from vegetation destruction is needed. Desertification needs to be related to the development of the rural economy in order to create an eco-economic model that can be applied to desertification control. A basic economic model of desertification control would include technical innovation and transfer in desertified regions, restoration of desert ecosystems with an emphasis on desertification control, and agricultural industrialization.
