The prospect for desertification in Kajiado District, Kenya

This paper assesses the risk of desertification occurring in Kajiado District, Kenya, within the context of changing interactions between population growth and land use. The district encompasses a semi-arid area in which the Maasai pastoral economy is dominant but in which farming and activities related to wildlife and tourism are becoming increasingly important. The paper identifies and discusses contemporary processes which are potential contributors to desertification, and then examines alternative development strategies which might reduce their negative impact.
