Politics and science shared the spotlight at the XIV International AIDS Conference, held in Barcelona, Spain, in July 2002. The meeting centered on the practicalities of the recently created Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria but also featured demonstrations from angry activists who demanded to know why the Global Fund has not amassed the $10 billion required to expand the response to HIV/AIDS in poor settings. A broad coalition at the meeting urged the rich nations of the world to contribute much more. In addition to the input from politicians, several important research presentations helped demolish a long-standing complaint that these gatherings resemble a circus more than a venue to swap cutting-edge data.
