Fluoropolymers have long been considered a desirable material for contact lens use. Flurofocon A, a high fluorine-content polymer, was developed by the 3M Company for use in extended wear contact lenses. In contrast to early fluoropolymers, this material shows excellent wettability and flexibility. It has high levels of oxygen transmissibility and an unusual resistance to deposit formation. These physiologic effects, combined with the optical stability of flurofocon A, suggest an important place for this new contact lens material.
