Malaria is the main cause of disease in Uganda; in 2003/4 it was responsible for 52% of out-patient visits, 30-35% of hospital admissions and 9-14% deaths in hospital (20-23% in children under 5 years old). The HBMF programme was introduced into the Nebbi district in June, 2004, when all children under 5 years of age with fever/malaria were treated at home by community drug distributors with Homapak (chloroquin or sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine); by May 2005 recovery had occurred in 94% of the 105 518 treated. The Homapak distribution to the health teams needs to be improved.
