Pathology of bilharzial bladder cancer

From July 1976 to January 1983 at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 160 cases of bladder carcinoma were diagnosed; 51 (31.9%) were associated with schistosomal infection. Squamous cell carcinoma accounted for 37 of the 51. The incidence of bladder carcinoma was greater in males than in females (the sex ratio was 9:1 in schistosomal cancer and 4:1 in non-schistosomal cancer). The mean age for schistosomal cancer was 42 years, compared with 64 for non-schistosomal cancer. The pathological changes associated with infection are illustrated by 37 photographs.
