The handbook comprises ten self-teaching units designed for those training for rural health work or already in the field. Techniques of investigating and definning community health problems are described, and illustrated with East African examples. The units examine issues such as preventing and treating disease, using numbers and graphs, health centres and their populations, samples and surveys, and evaluating community health services. There is a section on how to use the book, and there are tests and answers at the end of the book based on the ten self-instructional units.
