Between 1972 and 1975 Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand each undertook and compiled what amounted to national assessments of their elementary school systems. All four were complicated exercises, with large sample populations, extensive data collection, and sophisticated data analysis. All revealed numerous inadequacies and significant rural-urban and regional disparities. Study results have been widely disseminated and have had some effect on policy. This workshop brought together a small group of people involved in the studies, so that they could meet and examine their research experiences on a comparative basis. Interest concentrated on some specific common areas, particularly the implications of the research for policy, and future research needs.
