From the 40 tonsillar specimens studied, 25 actinomycete strains (62.5%) were isolated. They were A. israelii 40.0%, A. naesludii 15%, A. viscosus 5%, Arachnia propionica 7.5%, Bacterionema matruchotii 10% and Rothia dentocariosa 7.5%. Staphylococcus aureus 47.5%, Streptococcus salivarius 75% and Streptococcus pyogenes 27.5% were the aerobic organisms most frequently isolated. The possible role of S. pyogenes in the patients is discussed. In regard to the histopathological examination of the tonsillar material, in 14 cases actinomycotic filaments were associated with chronic inflammatory changes. In 9 cases actinomycotic granules were detected in microabscesses.
