Skin-sensitizing activity in bull calves appeared in the serum 8-10 days after primary injection of either ovalbumin or horse serum in Freund's complete adjuvant or 6-8 days after alum-precipitated ovalbumin. The typical passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction began after 10 min. as a blue circle, reaching maximum diameter at 45 min., when it had become a well-defined disc (minimum diameter 10 mm), intensely blue and raised above the surrounding skin. There was no evidence of nonspecific reaction when dye was administered prior to antigen. Normal calf serum gave no reaction whereas isotonic saline gave small sub-threshold reactions of 6 to 8 mm diam. The titre between the 8th and 10th days was between 1: 1 and 1: 10 which rose to 1: 40 between days 10 and 14 after which it fell to between 1: 1 and 1: 5 being maintained for several weeks. Heating of sensitizing sera at 56 degrees C for 30 min.
