The results with a 5-fluorouracil, adriamycin, mitomycin C (FAM) combination in the treatment of advanced gastrointestinal cancer are reported. Of 17 patients with advanced gastric cancer, 5 showed an objective response which was complete in 2. Of 18 patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, only 2 had a partial response. FAM treatment was generally well tolerated, and side effects were moderate. This treatment was effective in gastric cancer but was less active than other drug combinations in colorectal cancer.
