The methylation inhibitors, 5'-deoxy-5'-isobutylthioadenosine (SIBA) and 5'-deoxy-5'-isobutyl-3-deazaadenosine (deaza-SIBA) both inhibited the growth of Plasmodium falciparum in culture. Polyamine levels showed a consistent significant increase in spermidine in both infected and uninfected cells in the presence of either compound.
