Expression of the human beta-delta-globin gene in rabbits

A human .beta.-.delta.-globin gene, associated with non-histone chromosomal proteins, was encapsulated within a transferrin-coated lipid membrane, and injected i.v. into rabbits. This gene preparation was endocytosed selectively by erythroid precurosr cells in the bone marrow of the test animals. The exogenous gene was integrated in the chromosomal DNA of the cells and was expressed in the synthesis of human .beta.- and .delta.-globin chains. This was demonstrated by the detection of human A (.alpha.2.beta.2) and A2 (.alpha.2.delta.2) Hb in the peripheral blood of the animals.
