Comparative evaluation of structure and micromeritics properties of magnesium stearate

Two different types of magnesium stearate were fully characterized (X-ray, IR, D.S.C. , water contact angle, mercury porosimetry, etc.), one was crystalline, the other paracrystalline, i.e., with a short range molecular order structure. The influence of such profound structure difference on the resulting lubricating properties was studied by adding to a drug model, hydrochlorothiazide, percentages of the 2 magnesium stearates differing in weight but with the name total surface area. On the basis of intrinsic dissolution rate, water contact angle and ejection work data, the crystalline structure of the lubricant had no marked influence upon prolonged mixing times, on its film forming properties and on the characteristics of the resulting mixtures. The drug surface fraction coated by the lubricant was linearly dependent on the specific surface area of Mg.
