An overview is presented of the current situation of HIV/AIDS in the developing world. Issues discussed are: that life expectancy is falling, at the same time child mortality is rising; the macroeconomic impact; health care services; education; reasons for hope; the World Bank response (creating and strengthening partnerships with UNAIDS; and reaching agreement with government leaders to intensify the effort against AIDS); international support (increasing funding for HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment; providing assistance to building national capacity; identifying innovative means of financing the development of vaccines, female condoms, microbicides and other promising technologies; and supporting research to determine the economic impact of HIV/AIDS and the costs of inaction).
