Treatment of childhood malignancies in Kenya

Since 1975 attempts were made, although under difficult conditions, through the provision of standard protocols and careful supervision, to rationalize the care of children with cancer at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). Therapy protocols were initially adopted from those used by oncology groups in the USA or Europe. These however, were modified, redesigned, revised or adapted, through trial and error to suit our local situation. The final treatment protocols, now in use, for acute leukemia, malignant lymphoma and solid tumors are outlined. Standard supportive treatment was used, wherever required and wherever possible. A review of the work, results and problems in the management of childhood leukemia, lymphoma and solid tumors at KNH between 1975 and 1981 are presented. Prognostic factors and perspectives for future strategies are also examined.
