Farmer's wife, weaver's wife: women and work in two Southern Ethiopian communities

The paper compares women's economic positions in two ethnically similar and economically different communities in the Gamu Highlands of Southern Ethiopia. In Dita, men and women were both engaged in predominantly subsistance farming, while in Dorze the men were primarily weavers, and much agricultural land lay fallow. A brief background sketch of the area and its recent history is first given. Sections on farming, weaving, other forms of production for exchange, trading, wage labour and reproduction of the labour force follow.
