Acute toxicosis in swine associated with excessive dietary intake of vitamin D

Acute poisoning developed in a group of fattening swine and replacement gilts that had excessive vitamin D3 inadvertently added to their feed. All of the pigs were lethargic and vomiting was observed in about half of them 1-2 days after they had consumed the excessive vitamin D. Three of the pigs died on the 2nd day. The remaining pigs were given a different ration. Five additional pigs died during the next two weeks. Clinical toxicosis also was observed in one of two and in two of two pigs from different sources that were given the suspect ration. Gross lesions consistently observed were a haemorrhagic gastritis and diffuse interstitial pneumonia. The diagnosis was substantiated by analysis of the feed and serum for vitamin D3.
