A comparative analysis of beta-lactamase activity in enterobacteria

Strains (160) of enterobacteria isolated from patients were studied. All the studied species (7) of the bacteria belonging to Shigella, Salmonella and Proteus revealad .beta.-lactamase activity. A partial correlation exists between resistance to benzylpenicillin and .beta.-lactamase production. .beta.-Lactamase was produced chiefly by resistant strains. The studied species of enterobacteria differ between each other with respect to such properties as activity of .beta.-lactamase, capacity to induce its synthesis and resistance to benzylpenicillin. This may be used as an additional feature in characterization of these species of bacteria.
