A method to extract large amounts of biologically active S. mansonoides plerocercoid growth factor (PGF) is described. The quantity collected is sufficient to make concentration procedures unnecessary. Plerocercoid tails were homogenized with 1% Triton X-100 and centrifuged at 150 g for 5 min. Soluble proteins were then removed from the supernatant. Growth factor activity was determined in a radioreceptor assay. Daily injections of solubilized PGF into intact hamsters for 5 days stimulated a significant increase in body weight and suppressed endogenous growth hormone.
