Since 1978, the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) was diagnosed in 24 children (infants and children up to 15-yr-old) born to 12 alcoholic mothers. A strikingly high frequency of fine light hair was observed in those patients who at birth showed psychomotor instability which together with growth retardation and mental deficiency persisted up to preschool age. In 8 of these children (age between 12-36 mo.), a systematic follow-up of the level of amino acids in blood was carried out by application of the method of liquid chromatography on ion exchangers. A severe disorder in the spectrum of free amino acids in blood serum and a direct dependence between aminoacidemia and the severity of growth retardation, mental deficiency, and psychomotor instability were shown.
