Fetal alcohol syndrome was observed in 4 siblings. Fetal development was inadequate; the chilren display facial dysmorphism, insufficient subcutaneous fatty tissue and abnormalities of behavior. The degree of damage appears to be correlated with the intensity (both time and dose related) of alcohol abuse during pregnancy. The deficient growth and the lack of subcutaneous fatty tissue may be the consequence of damage to the fetal liver, resulting from the production inhibition of certain somatomedin fractions during fetal life.
