Effective control of bovine leukosis in Lower Saxony based on the example of the Nienburg/Weser District

A retrospective survey in a selected district considered representative of Lower Saxony showed that in the 1960s an eradication scheme based on haematological examination was ineffective because only advanced cases were revealed. Serological testing with an ether resistant antigen used in 1977 increased the reactor rate considerably and a further rise followed when the gp antigen was introduced. After a sharp reduction of the reactor rate in 1979-80, followed by sporadic cases in 1981-82, the district was declared free from leukosis in 1983.
