In 5 of 39 cases of neurofibromatosis diagnosed from 1972-1981, malignant changes were found in different locations. Three cases of neurofibrosarcoma in the posterior mediastinum are presented. In an 8-yr-old girl the tumor was completely excised, with no recurrence during 2 yr of follow-up. In a 30-yr-old man the tumor was only partially excised because of possible injury to the brachial plexus. In the 3rd patient, a 30-yr-old woman, the tumor could not be removed during the operation. Intensive clinical and roentgenological monitoring of these patients is of the utmost importance to enable early diagnosis and accurate surgical treatment.
