Suspected Se-vitamin E deficiency in heifers

A group of grain-fed heifers became stiff, and some sternally recumbent, upon exercising after winter confinement. All but 2 of the affected heifers gradually recovered after intramuscular injections of selenium-vitamin E and intravenous infusion of Ca-Mg solution. Laboratory analyses indicated normal serum concentrations of Se, calcium and magnesium but elevated concentrations of aspartate aminotransferase. Though serum assays failed to show low Se concentrations, the presumptive diagnosis was based upon clinical signs and a good response to Se-vitamin E treatment. Heifers which had overwintered in another pen and had not been given grain were unaffected.
