The effect of a PMSG/HCG preparation in anoestrous sows and gilts

39 anoestrous Swedish Landrace, Swedish Large White and crossbred sows were treated with 400 IU PMSG plus 200 IU HCG 8-72 days after weaning., and 20 gilts which had not exhibited oestrus by 8 months of age were given the same treatment. 79.5% of treated sows exhibited oestrus within an average of 7.5 days (1-28 days) of treatment, and 75% of gilts showed oestrus within an average of 9.5 days (1-59 days). The interval from treatment to oestrus was significantly shorter for femalefemale with a low blood progesterone concentration (0-3 nmol/litre) on the day of treatment than for femalefemale with high progesterone concentration (38.5% of sows and 35% of gilts). Gestation length averaged 116.6 and 116.2 days resp. for treated gilts and sows, and litter size averaged 11.1 and 11.7.
