Lobectomy for hepatic malignancy

The only treatment that can possibly cure primary or secondary hepatic malignancy is total resection of the neoplastic lesions. When malignant lesions are confined to only 1 lobe, without extraheptic spread, lobectomy gives the best chance of survival. Ultrasonography, liver scan, CT scan and the detection of specific antigens allow early diagnosis and precise localization of the tumor. The techniques of dissection along lobar and segmental planes in use at present allow extensive hepatic resection with low morbidity and mortality. In 5 patients with primary or metastatic liver tumors, there were no postoperative complications. The follow-up ranged from 1-2 yr.
