A new haptoglobin variant found in the Ahirs of Cutch (Gujarat)

During study of haptoglobin polymorphism in the different endogamous castes in Cutch, Gujarat state, India, a new heterozygous haptoglobin phenotype was detected in 3 of 148 (2.03%) serum samples of the Ahirs. The new phenotype has been provisionally called Hp-2-1 Goshar because it did not correspond with any other phenotypes reported so far.
