Treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with a delayed-action preparation of Trasicor

Efficiency of slow-transicor (Ciba-Geigy) in treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy had been investigated using the double-blind method. The drug was applied in 14 patients with various forms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. A daily dose of 320 mg slow-trasicor was administered in 2 portions. Results were evaluated in 12 patients; 2 had abandoned the treatment: 1 due to discomfort, and the other due to bradycardia below 40/min. The tests included subjective evaluation of improvement expressed as reduced complaint and increased physical efficiency; and objective assessment of physical efficiency in an effort test, heart outline in a chest X-ray, % a wave index in ECG, isovolumetric left ventricle diastole duration in polygraphycardiac cavity, septum and posterior wall dimensions in echographic test and the ECG picture. No statistically significant differences before and after slow-transicor therapy, and during placebo administration, were stated in any of those tests. Most patients (83%) felt improvement in physical efficiency and reduced complaint. The effort test had shown improvement in physical efficiency in 3 patients (25%).
