Chicken IgG, when purified by chromatography on a DEAE-Sephadex A-50 column, is contaminated with a .beta. component. Antisera raised against this component either by inoculating precipitin bands or bands separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, were always having antibodies to classical IgG also. The other way round was not valid. These antibodies to IgG could be removed by minimal absorption with IgG. Using monospecific antisera, the .beta. component was found to be present in chicken sera of all age groups. The immunoelectrophoretic mobility of this .beta. component was distinct from all the 3 known immunoglobulins and had a MW of about 190,000. It was not possible to demonstrate antibody activity in the .beta. component against bovine serum albumin in immunized chickens either by antiglobulin test or by radioimmunoelectrophoresis. The component apparently is a non-immunoglobulin component of chicken serum, whose function remains undetermined.
